UP professors call for Arroyo’s resignation (12:50 a.m.)

THE University Council of the University of the Philippines-Diliman joined various groups in calling for the immediate resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

In a statement released past 11 Wednesday morning, the council, composed of 1,093 professors, associate professors and assistant professors and chaired by the Chancellor, calls on the people to guard against foreign meddling and military takeover in the event the president is removed.

“UP Diliman faculty members will join the people in their struggle to build a progressive society and the responsible government and their commitment to uphold civilian supremacy in government and governance thus we call on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to immediately resign,” the council said in a statement.

The statement also states that careful analysis of the content and context of the recorded conversations between President Arroyo and former commissioner Virgilio Garcillano clearly showed that there has been a betrayal of public trust.

The decision was made after a series of meetings and consultations with various sectors. The decision was also put to vote and the vote overwhelmingly supported the resign call for the president.

The council also adopted the statement earlier released by the UP College of Law which is endorsing the resignation call of President Arroyo. (Sunnex)
