CAMP OLIVAS -- Two men were killed while three policemen were wounded after a foiled robbery attempt at a food store along the McArthur Highway in Barangay San Agustin, San Fernando City turned into shootout Sunday dawn.
Chief Superintendent Alejandro Lapinid, chief of the Central Luzon police, identified the fatalities as one Michael Cuerdo Reyes, a bystander, and a suspected robber, who was described to be in his mid 20s, with fair complexion, thin build, straight hair and clad in dark-colored short pants and yellow t-shirt.
Those injured were Chief Inspector Josie Tibuc, Senior Police Officer 1 Albert Manabat, and Police Officer (PO) 2 Vidal Lingat of the San Fernando City police.
A report said the dead robbery suspect, along with his cohort identified as Christopher Hernandez, tried to stage a heist in a Burger Machine food outlet situated in the area when chanced upon by policemen at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Police pursued the robbery suspects and one was spotted near the 7-11 Convenience Store in the city center.
Upon seeing the policemen, the man drew his handgun and ran towards the Pampanga Hotel, near the Metropolitan Cathedral, shooting at the chasing policemen, but a stray bullet hit Reyes, who happened to be in the area.
During the shootout, Tibuc was hit at the back while Manabat and Lingat sustained shrapnel wounds on their hands.
At this juncture, PO3 Percival Talens, also of the San Fernando City police, arrived at the scene on board a mobile patrol unit and shot the burglar, who died on the spot.
Hernandez, on the other hand, managed to escape.
