Brunei Airlines lands safely after developing engine trouble (1:40 p.m.)

MANILA -- A Royal Brunei Airlines jet carrying 146 people made an emergency landing in Manila after one of its two engines stopped working, officials said Monday.

The Airbus 320 was on a flight Sunday from Hong Kong to Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, when it developed engine trouble, forcing it to land at the nearest airport, Manila airport assistant manager Octavio Lina said.

"The plane's engine No. 2 shut off for unexplained reasons while it was airborne," Lina said.

The 139 passengers and seven crewmembers disembarked normally from the plane and were booked on a regular commercial flight to Brunei, Lina said.

The Airbus 320 was grounded in Manila and was still being repaired Monday, the airline said.

The incident comes after another Royal Brunei jet made an emergency landing in Bandar Seri Begawan shortly after take off last Wednesday when its front landing gear developed problems in mid air. (AP)
