Hold order sought vs Davao boxer
By Raquel C. Bagnol

DAVAO CITY -- North Cotabato Governor Emmanuel Piñol has asked a local court to issue a hold departure order against boxer, Diosdado Gabi--the Prince of Filipino flyweights, pending resolution of criminal charges against him.

Gabi, Piñol said, is scheduled to leave for the United States soon for a boxing match under his new Canadian manager Michael Concz.

Piñol filed the complaint for other deceits against Gabi before the Municipal Trial Court and Cities after Gabi left his stable without informing him and with a pending cash advance.

The governor said he started managing the boxer since 2002 after he bought the managerial rights from Gabi's former manager Roger Sumampong for P150,000.

Piñol said from 2002 to 2005, he spent a total of P4,788,700 for Gabi, but the boxer only made him believe he was his manager.

Assistant City Prosecutor Jofre A. Saniel recommended the charges against Gabi after finding probable cause to hold him for court trial.

Piñol said Gabi was supposed to fight opponent Rolando Alvarez in Nicaragua in May this year. He said Gabi asked for a cash advance of P150,000, but he claimed the boxer left the training camp after he received the money and can no longer be contacted.

Piñol said Gabi's father told him that Gabi has decided to stop boxing and go farming instead.

He said he just learned that Gabi is training for a boxing match in the United States under Concz.

Gabi, carries a ring record of 24 wins, 2 losses, 18 wins by knockout and 2 draws.
