'Something big' looms in Davao City: mayor
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is expecting "something big" to happen in Davao City in the coming days, but refuses to say what it is.

In a press conference over the weekend, Duterte said they are monitoring something big in the region and are just waiting for the right moment to make their move.

"They are in the peripheral provinces, but it is something big," he said.

While refusing to elaborate, he hinted that this "big thing" has something to do with terrorism when he said: "Ang concern ko lang talaga sa ngayon is terrorism. Ang droga wala na yan kasi patay naman lahat ng issue na 'yan dito." (My concern at present is terrorism. The drugs issue is a dead one.)

Rumors of terrorist attacks in Davao City continue following the bomb explosions in the cities of Koronadal, Cotabato, and Zamboanga. Davao City, being the most urbanized city in Mindanao, remains a prime target of terrorists.

The police and military, however, were on their toes throughout the weeklong Kadayawan Festival so that despite the droves of people who flocked to the city, the only crimes reported were snatching incidents and the celebration went on smoothly.

As the celebration peaked in the last two days, which featured the Indak-indak sa Dalan last Saturday and the Floral Float Parade last Sunday, more than 2,000 members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and around 500 Task Force Davao (TFD) soldiers were deployed to keep the crowd safe.

The Indak-indak and the Floral Float parade were the biggest crowd-drawer among all Kadayawan activities as people flock to major thoroughfares where the parade and street-dancers passed through for two straight days.
