Air Force adopts energy-saving moves By Reynaldo G. Navales
CLARK ECOZONE -- In a bid to conserve energy, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) has adopted and imposed several measures, including "car-less" days and the use of bicycles by personnel.
Brigadier General Gilbert S. Llanto, commander of the 600th Air Base Wing, said the Air Force City located in the economic zone is now in full implementation of the energy conservation drive.
Llanto said a "car-less day" will be observed every Tuesday and Thursday in the camp.
He added that all Air Force personnel are directed to either use bikes or walk in going to their respective offices and places of assignments from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
During a dry run last Thursday, the 620th Security Police Group (SPG) apprehended at least 18 soldiers and officers violating the directive.
Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto M. Elevazo, 620th SPG commander, said two top Air Force officers were among those apprehended during Thursday's dry run.
"This (energy conservation) is a very serious drive. But ours has been existing even before the directive from the PAF headquarters (was issued)," Llanto said.
He said the highest consuming area in the Air Force City is the barracks "so we reduced our consumption in electricity by controlling the use of lights and air conditioners."
Air Force officers in Clark are also encouraging personnel to do "fatigue works" like cleaning and physical fitness every afternoon to reduce electricity consumption.
The PAF also brought down fuel consumption of its vehicles.
"As of now, we still allow the use of motorcycles among our men. We want to give them time to acquire their own bicycles," Llanto said.
All government entities were directed to reduce their energy consumption by 10 percent and the Air Force is determined to achieve this by the end of the year, said the Air Force official. (Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
