2 die in stampede at rock concert in Manila (3:00 p.m.)
MANILA -- Hundreds of spectators stampeded at a suburban Manila stadium after somebody apparently shouted that there was a robber in the packed crowd, killing two people and injuring at least six others, police said Sunday.
The stampede occurred as the crowd was pushing its way into the Amoranto stadium in Quezon City to watch a free concert by rock bands late Saturday, metropolitan Manila police chief Vidal Querol said.
Two men were pinned by the surging crowd and died while being brought to a hospital, investigators said.
"It's very unfortunate," Querol said. "Apparently somebody in the crowd shouted that there was a robber and then there was panic."
A police investigation was underway to determine if the organizers took adequate precautions to prevent such a fatal accident, he said. (AP) |
