Police officer, driver die in highway crash By Joy G. Romares
DAVAO CITY -- A police officer and a van for hire driver died when the van they were in crashed onto a speeding Isuzu Elf in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, Sunday night.
Eleven other passengers were injured.
Declared dead at the San Pedro Hospital were Chief Inspector Rodelio Pangilinan, summary hearing officer of the police Internal Affairs Services (IAS) in Davao Oriental, and William Moncal, of Kidapawan City and driver of the Toyata Hi-Ace passenger van.
Those injured were identified as Jaena Gelasan, 17; Jason Wong, 15; Seena Fe Cervania, 19; Raquel Maina, 37; Ronalyn Delnorte, 18; Emma Collados, 50; Orly Collados; Sheryl Ablang, 24; all residents of Kidapawan City; Zadina Suarez, 36, Reen Kristine Suarez, 7, of Makilala; and one Phoebe Arellano, 23, resident of Bansalan.
The van, loaded with passengers, was bound for Kidapawan City when a speeding Elf truck driven by one Christopher Ortata dela Peña of Quezon City ploughed into it along the national highway in Tagabuli, Sta. Cruz at around 7 p.m.
Dela Peña was with his helper named Carolino Paulo, 28, of Bangkal, Davao City when the incident happened.
Dela Peña is now in the custody of the Sta. Cruz police and is facing an investigation. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
