Arroyo urges public servants to cut down on phone calls (10:50 a.m.)

MANILA – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has a message for public employees: cut down on phone talk.

After the government's phone bill for calls made last year totaled P3.73 billion (US$67.8 million; euro56 million), has ordered that government pay only for official calls, her spokesman said Tuesday.

"We expect all government agencies to strictly implement" the rules, spokesman Ignacio Bunye said.

Bunye said the president encouraged the use of alternative communication tools, such as Voice-over-Internet Protocol, an Internet-based telephone and communications service.
