Shootout in Tagum: cop, 3 'robbers' killed By Frinston Lim
DAVAO CITY -- Three suspected robbers and a policeman died in a shootout in Tagum City, Wednesday. Two of those killed remain unidentified.
The shootout happened during a dragnet by the police against the suspected robbers, Tagum City Police Director Thor Valiente Cuyos said.
Cuyos identified the fallen policeman as Police Officer 1 Manuel Malingin, a member of the Provincial Mobile Group.
Cuyos said they are still monitoring other robbery gangs in Tagum City.
"Daghang grupo pa ang among gisundan (We're monitoring other groups)," he said.
The 1101st PMG headed by Senior Inspector Lito Patay launched the operation against the gang headed by Jessie Quindao at his safehouse in Soriano compound, Barangay Apokon at around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Quindao has a pending warrant for robbery and hold-up.
"Nagpabuto man. Misukol (They fired a gun, they resisted arrest)," Cuyos said in an interview just an hour after the shootout.
According to the initial report, one of the armed men who was serving as the lookout was on a hammock outside the house when the police arrived.
The man fired at the approaching policemen, alerting his two other companions inside the house. An exchange of fire ensued.
As the firing stopped, four men lay dead, including PO1 Malingin.
Recovered from the house were three .38 caliber revolvers, a hand grenade, and three packets of dried marijuana leaves. One of the six-round revolvers had three empty shells, another had only one live bullet, while the last one was still fully loaded.
Also recovered was a black Honda TMX with no plates. "Kining si Quindao suspek sa tulis sa Davao City ug (This Quindao is a robbery suspect in Davao City and he also has) some cases in Tagum City," Cuyos said.
Among his cases in Tagum City is the killing of a salesman of the International Pharmaceuticals Inc., manufacturer and distributor of Efficascent Oil and other pharmaceutical products, last Saturday.
Salesman Rolando Abillar, 59, was held up and slain by three men on a black motorcycle while he was eating durian by the roadside. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
