Town cop chief, 5 others killed in ambush By Al Jacinto
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A southern Philippine police chief and five of his men were killed in an ambush Sunday in the province of Lanao del Sur, a regional police commander said.
Supt. Akmad Mamalinta said at least 20 gunmen opened fire on the patrol car, killing all six in the village of Mabel in Malabang town around 2:30 p.m.
"Six of my men were killed in the attack, including town police chief Corias Tambugao. Police forces are now hunting down the perpetrators," he said.
Tambugao was the police chief of Tubaran town.
Mamalinta said the policemen were returning to their headquarters in Tubaran town, about 100 kilometers away, after attending the training graduation of government militias in Parang town, when the gunmen attacked them.
Initial police reports tagged relatives of bandits killed by the police as behind the ambush, he said. "We have identified some of the attackers and we will arrest them," he said.
Muslim autonomous region Governor Datu Zaldy Ampatuan ordered police forces to intensify the hunt for the ambushers in the province. "We have alerted
police forces in the province to arrest the ambushers," he said.
Lanao is one of five provinces under the Muslim autonomous region. (Sun.Star Zamboanga/Sunnex)
