25 rebels overrun police outpost in Tagum By Ben O. Tesiorna and Frinston Lim
DAVAO CITY -- Some 25 armed men, believed to be member of the New People's Army (NPA), attacked a police outpost in Tagum City on Tuesday night.
Philippine National Police provincial director Senior Superintendent Jaime Morente said the attack happened on the Magdum outpost of the 1101st provincial mobile group at around 11:30 p.m.
Morente said before the attack happened, three policemen and two barangay police on duty received a report about an amok incident at the quarry site.
He added that while two policemen along with a barangay police were on their way to the area, a group of 15 suspected NPA members blocked their way and disarmed them.
Around 10 other rebels arrived at the Magdum outpost onboard a blue six-wheeler dump truck and disarmed the policeman and a member of the barangay police left to man the post.
A certain Ka Marlon of the Front Guerilla Unit 33 led the rebels, according to police.
The rebels seized three M-16 armalite rifles, one M-14 rifle, one 12-gauge shotgun, and one .38 and .45 caliber pistols.
Morente said the police were caught by surprise, as the rebels did not fire a single shot.
NPA members have perpetrated a series of atrocities in less than a month.
On October 26, rebels burned P33 million worth of heavy equipment in Talaingod, Davao del Norte allegedly due the nonpayment of revolutionary taxes by the Provincial Government. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
