Arroyo travels to Hong Kong for private weekend visit (10: 00 p.m.)
HONG KONG -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo traveled to Hong Kong on Saturday for a private weekend visit after attending an Asia-Pacific summit in South Korea, her office said.
Arroyo was to spend the rest of the weekend in Hong Kong and return home on Monday, according to a schedule released by her office. The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong did not answer calls seeking confirmation of her scheduled arrival early Saturday evening.
The trip to Hong Kong came after Arroyo attended a forum for the 21-member Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation in Busan, South Korea.
ABS-CBN, the Philippines' largest broadcast network, reported that Arroyo's corruption-tainted husband, Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo, was to join her in Hong Kong. He recently returned to the Philippines after spending three months abroad in voluntary exile.
Mike Arroyo, an attorney, has been accused of influence-peddling and receiving illegal gambling kickbacks. He faces no charges and has denied taking gambling payoffs. The accusations are the subject of an ongoing congressional inquiry.(AP) |
