Palace shrugs off error in 100-peso bills
MANILA -- Malacañang on Monday said it is considering as "an honest mistake" the misspelling of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's last name in the latest P100 bills released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
"In spite of all technologies, tao pa rin ang may tangan ng equipment, nagkakamali (those running the equipment are people, they commit mistakes)," Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said in an interview during the arrival ceremonies for Arroyo at the airport.
Reports said the BSP subcontractor, which handled the printing in its plant in Quezon City, misspelled the President's last name as "Arrovo".
BSP Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. has reportedly apologized to Arroyo in a letter. The BSP has said the bills are still considered legal tender despite the misspelling.
Ermita said there is no harm done because Tetangco has apologized and ordered a correction.
President Arroyo did not mention the issue during the roundtable discussion in Malacañang aired over NBN 4 where Tetangco was also present.
The topics discussed were Arroyo's trip to Hong Kong, updates on preparations against the avian flu, and the country's economic indicators.
Arroyo, at the start of the show, even introduced Tetangco as "hinahangaan sa Wall Street (being admired in Wall Street)." Wall Street in New York is the financial area of the US. (Sunnex)
