Air Force officer likely to succeed navy chief By Al Jacinto
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Vice Admiral Mateo Mayuga, the Armed Forces inspector general, is likely to assume as the next chief of the Philippine Navy when Admiral Ernesto de Leon retires on Monday, military sources said.
Mayuga, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy Class 1973, was chosen over Commodore George Uy, the current navy's chief of staff, sources said.
Mayuga headed a fact-finding team that investigated the alleged participation of several military officers in cheating in the southern Philippines during the May 2004 national elections.
He also allegedly led military agents in a raid in August of an opposition safe house in San Mateo town in Rizal province.
Captain Geronimo Malabanan, navy spokesman, said they have no information who would replace De Leon.
"We don't have information at this time, but the announcement would be made on Monday by officials on who would replace Admiral De Leon," he said.
Many navy and marine soldiers in the southern Philippines support Uy, who once headed the naval forces in troubled region, because of his numerous accomplishments in the government's anti-terrorism campaign.
Uy was also instrumental in the capture of many Abu Sayyaf and New People's Army rebel leaders in the south. (Sun.Star Zamboanga/Sunnex)
