Misamis Oriental solons admit talking to Garci By Lizanilla J. Amarga
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Two local congressmen in Northern Mindanao said they did speak with former election commissioner Virgilio Garcillano but not in relation to the May 2004 polls.
The former election commissioner said during a congressional hearing Wednesday that Misamis Oriental first district Representative Danilo Lagbas and Camiguin Representative Jesus Romualdo were among those who called him up or met with him during the 2004 election season.
Lagbas and Romualdo said there was nothing wrong or illegal about calling a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official.
Lagbas, who won over Misamis Oriental Vice Governor Miguel de Jesus in the 2004 electoral race, admitted calling up Garcillano but only to get accreditation for his bodyguard and their firearms.
Romualdo, meanwhile, said it was Garcillano who kept calling him in connection with the ex-poll official's confirmation as election commissioner before the Commission on Appointments.
He denied calling up or meeting with Garcillano before or during the 2004 election season.
"I remember as I don't have amnesia," Romualdo said.
"I do not know why Garcillano included me as among those who called him up," he added.
He said Garcillano wanted his support and called him up some four or five times in August 2004.
"He called me up, particularly when the Commission on Appointments would postpone a hearing. Garcillano would call me up and ask why it did not push through," Romualdo said. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
