Amok cop kills town police chief By Rex C. Otero and Nilo Cobrado
DAVAO CITY -- A policeman ran amuck and killed the police chief of Magsaysay town in Davao del Sur Sunday night after he discovered that his game fowl was stolen.
The amok policeman was also killed.
Police Inspector Roberto Ramos would have marked his second month as chief of the Magsaysay Municipal Police Office on Thursday. He was just transferred to Magsaysay from the Digos City Police Office.
Senior Police Officer 1 Alejandro Sarabillo killed Ramos and wounded Senior Police Officer 1 Benjamin Duguel Jr. in his shooting rampage.
Duguel is still being treated at the Davao Medical Center.
"We were able to borrow two bags of blood from the Davao Medical Center blood bank," Duguel's wife told reporters.
Initial investigation showed Sarabillo was already drunk when he went to the house of his father-in-law Antonio Pantinople at Upper Kasuga in Magsaysay at around 6:20 p.m. Sunday. He was told upon reaching the house that his game fowl was stolen.
The news angered him so much that he grabbed his M16 armalite rifle and fired it.
In fear, the neighbors sought the help of the police. A team of five policemen led by Ramos arrived.
Ramos and Duguel entered Pantinople's house and tried to pacify Sarabillo.
Just when they thought Sarabillo would be handing over his M16 rifle, he instead fired at Ramos, hitting him in the head and chest, and at Duguel, hitting him in the thigh.
Duguel fired back and peppered Sarabillo with bullets.
Sarabillo was declared dead when brought to the Viacrusis Medical Clinic in Bansalan town while Ramos died while being brought to the Digos Doctors Hospital.
Police investigators recovered eight armalite shells and five slugs.
They said that aside from the game fowl that was stolen, Sarabillo could have been in an unstable mental state because his wife left him recently.
Police investigation showed though that Sarabillo was already living in with another woman just before he died. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
