Floods displace 1-T families in Caraga By Ben Serrano
BUTUAN CITY -- Heavy rains that hit Caraga Region since December 22, which flooded low-lying communities, affected 9,972 persons or 2,058 families and damaging local infrastructures, crops, and livestock estimated at P30 million.
Eugene Cabrera, acting regional director of the Office of the Civil Defense in Caraga Region, said while citing a partial disaster operations report that the flooding has affected 37 barangays in seven towns here including Surigao City.
The report, however, did not include Butuan City's affected barangays.
In a radio interview, the local office of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in the city said they are closely monitoring an "active low pressure area" somewhere between the eastern portion of Mindanao and Eastern Visayas.
Pagasa said that should it develop into a tropical depression the storm might be named "Ramil."
Fishermen in Misamis Oriental area were advised to take precautionary measures should they venture into the seas.
Meanwhile, Surigao City Mayor Alfonso Casurra told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro earlier that damages to crops and livestock for Surigao City's affected barangays alone is estimated at P17 million to P20 million.
In San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, a 22-year-old farmer in Barangay Patong was the first casualty of the flashfloods that hit the Surigao del Sur town.
The local Disaster Coordinating Council in the area identified the victim as Salvador Elicona, a resident of Barangay Patong, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur.
Elicona reportedly tried to salvage washed away logs when a strong current of the Patong River carried the farmer away.
In Agusan del Norte, the local disaster coordinating council reported 705 families or about 2,319 persons affected in eight villages of the province.
In Surigao del Norte, 23 barangays were affected in four municipalities while in seaport Surigao City, the provincial capital, six low lying barangays were affected totally dislocating 7,853 individuals or 2,000 families.
In Surigao del Sur, the municipality of San Miguel had been hit as well with six barangays housing 30 families affected.
Surigao del Sur provincial disaster coordinating council claimed they are still consolidating reports from other municipalities affected by the flashfloods.
As of press time, the province of Agusan del Sur have not submitted reports on the extent of the damages brought by the flashfloods that also hit the province, the biggest among four provinces in the Caraga Region. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
