Fire razed 100 shanties in Cubao

MANILA -- A big New Year's fire swept through a squatter's colony in Cubao, Quezon City destroying 100 shanties, the Bureau of Fire Protection said.

It was the first fire reported in Metro Manila in 2006.

Initial investigation showed that a spark from a firecracker caused the fire, which occurred five minutes after midnight.

Rolando Bandilla, BFP chief, said the fire originated from the house of a certain Romeo de Mesa, a resident of Lantana Street in Barangay Immaculate Conception. The fire reached Task Force Delta alarm.

The fire, which lasted for six hours, also gutted an apartment near the squatter's area before it was placed under control at 6:36 a.m.

BFP records show some 109 fire incidents, which destroyed millions of pesos worth of properties, occurred in Metro Manila alone since December 1. (PNA/Sunnex)
