Ex-Cabinet official: Be all out for int'l forum

DAVAO CITY -- Former presidential assistant for Mindanao Paul G. Dominguez urged Dabawenyos to unite behind Davao City's historic hosting of the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF), which is slated to start in 10 days.

Known for his pioneering efforts to develop the BIMP-Eaga (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East-Asean Growth Area) grouping, Dominguez said Davao should put its best foot forward during the ATF because so much of its tourism development depends on its success.

ATF is an annual gathering of stakeholders of the travel and tourism government and private sectors in the Asean with the main objective of promoting the region as one destination.

The nine-day event is highlighted with government meetings tackling policy directions for the region, private sector group meetings that adopt policies formulated in government meetings, and Travel Exchange (Travex), an exclusive business activity participated in by tourism buyers and sellers.

Sellers are hotels, resorts, and others operating in the Asean region, while buyers are wholesalers and tour operators who bring business to the Asean.

Dominguez recalled that the cities and province of Cebu as well as most other places in Central Visayas have been enjoying a boom in travel and tourism since Cebu City hosted the ATF in 1998.

"I have gone to a lot of places in our country and the world and I still have to see a city more livable than Davao," said the former Cabinet official, who is now in private business running a string of companies including a mining firm.

Dominguez credited Davao City's excellent livability to the leadership of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and the cooperation of Dabawenyos with the way he runs the City Government. (AMA of Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
