Police killed, civilian wounded in attack By Al Jacinto
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A lone gunman killed a policeman and wounded a civilian in a daring broad daylight attack Wednesday in the southern port city of Zamboanga, police said.
Police said the gunman shot policeman Denmar Padam in the head, killing him instantly, as his motorcycle slowed down near a school in Talon-Talon village around 1:10 p.m.
They said civilian Emeterio Aquino was hit in the body by a stray bullet and his condition is still unknown. Hospital staff would not talk to reporters.
"There is an ongoing investigation. We still don't know the motive of the killing, but the gunman shot Padam in the head with a pistol and escaped after the attack," said police investigator Jaime Francisco.
He said Padam was on his way to work in Arena Blanco village when attacked.
Last month, gunmen also killed agent Cenelito Custodo, a member of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, in an attack in Zamboanga City's Sta. Catalina village.
Custodio was shot eight times in the head and body as he stepped out from his house, police said.
Dozens of people had been killed the past years in Zamboanga City where summary executions are rampant. Officials blame the proliferation of illegal weapons, despite a strict police campaign to seize unlicensed firearms, on the series of killings.
Most of the killings were believed perpetrated by guns-for-hire, who had executed prominent people, including doctors, lawyers, traders and even journalists. (Sun.Star Zamboanga/Sunnex)
