500 city workers relieved from jobs
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

DAVAO CITY -- A total of 500 contractual workers will have to start looking for other jobs after their contracts of service were not renewed.

Six thousand others got new contracts effective January 1 to June 30, 2006.

The 500 contracts that were not renewed involved workers who have violated some work policies.

"Like tardiness, absenteeism and poor performance," said City Human Resource Management Officer Marcelino P. Escalada Friday.

There's nothing unusual in the renewed contracts, however, since the city has been renewing such number since 2004.

The new contracts, Escalada said, were signed by Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte last January 2.

"The most number of contractual employees that were renewed were from the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (Cenro)," Escalada said in an interview. The others were from the City Engineer's Office, Traffic Management Center (TMC), and 911 Emergency Center.

Among other labor-intensive offices, the TMC has been assigning hundreds of traffic aides to key intersections and regularly congested roads in the city in the hope of easing the worsening traffic situation amid massive preparations for the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) next week.

But TMC chief Celso Gempesaw said they would continue hatching new plans to decongest city streets even after the ATF.

"There will be a continuing effort from us in putting order in our streets even after ATF," Gempesaw said during the weekly I-speak forum Thursday. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
