Duterte orders legal preemptive strike v. terrorists

DAVAO CITY -- Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ordered police and military authorities to implement "legal preemptive strikes" against suspected terrorists out to sabotage the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) to be held here on January 13-21.

In a meeting with the intelligence community of both the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police Friday night, Duterte was said to have ordered the immediate arrest of any suspected terrorists in the region.

Duterte's move is to ensure the security and safety of about 2,000 foreign delegates who would attend the upcoming tourism forum.

It was not known though if there is a clear and present danger against the forum delegates who will start arriving in the city next week.

But Task Force Davao chief Eduardo del Rosario said there is nothing new with the latest order of Duterte adding that they have been doing such since the beginning of their operation in the city.

"We neutralize terrorist threat before they can bomb any probable target. The mayor issued the order to emphasize our resolve to protect the city and the people against the terrorists before, during, and after the ATF," del Rosario said.

The city is now all set for the holding of the ATF.

Aside from the security preparations, the city has also come up with a new traffic management system that creates a special action team to regulate traffic flow during the forum.

It includes the deployment of traffic personnel in areas where the forum will be conducted and hotels where the VIPs and delegates will be billeted.

The City Government has allotted P20 million as share in hosting the forum and separate a fund was allocated specifically for the security preparation for the event.

About 15 ministers will be arriving here along with thousands more from the business and tourism sectors of the participating countries.

More than 400 exhibitors from 10 countries and 470 buyers and media practitioners from six continents are expected to attend the international event. All the 928 attendees have confirmed their participation in the forum.(Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
