Crime up by 66% in Cebu towns, 5 cities

CEBU CITY -- The number of crimes in Cebu Province in 2005 increased by 66 percent from 2004's figures.

While there was an average of 8.47 crimes per month in 2004, last year's average reached 14 crimes each month.

This is according to comparative statistics from the Cebu Provincial Police Office Operations Branch for January to November.

A total of 3,491 crimes were recorded in 2005, which was 1,397 higher than the previous year's 2,094 incidents.

Of the 3,491 cases, 1,223 were listed as non-index crimes, while 2,268 were index crimes.

However, the crime solution efficiency increased from 81.4 percent to 85.4 percent.

They were able to solve 2,984 of the 3,491 crimes last year, leaving 534 pending.

In 2004, 1,704 of the 2,094 crimes were solved.

Lapu-Lapu City, the most urbanized area under the CPPO, made up 608 of the 2,268 index crimes of last year. It also registered a crime volume of 730.

Talisay City came in second with 326 index crimes and a crime volume of 357.

Danao City had a crime volume of 168, while San Fernando had 129.

Other areas that registered high crime volumes were Toledo City, Medellin and Consolacion.

Serious physical injury was the most common crime committed in 2005, with 928 cases reported. Police solved 829 of these cases.

Of the 928 cases, Lapu-Lapu City had the most reported with 234 while Talisay City followed with 152.

Theft followed serious physical injuries, with 673 incidents; 481 of these were solved.

Most of the theft incidents happened in Lapu-lapu City, with 260 reported and Talisay City with 108.

Lapu-Lapu City also made up 72 of the 281 robbery cases reported.

Despite these figures, Lapu-Lapu City topped the accomplishments list, making up 122 of the total 1,223 non-index crimes.

Cebu Province saw 194 murders, 68 homicides, 110 rapes, and 281 robberies.

They conducted 258 operations against illegal drugs, 97 against illegal gambling, 115 against illegal firearms and 31 against environmental violations. (Sun.Star Cebu)
