Arroyo bares goals for 2006 (10:44 a.m.)

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo revealed Monday night that her three strategic objectives for 2006 are to build a stronger economy, to build a stronger republic by fighting terrorism and destabilization and bringing peace to Mindanao, and to press for long overdue political reforms through Charter change.

At the traditional New Year cocktails and reception with the diplomatic corps Monday night, Arroyo said she is "confident and hopeful" about the state of the country. She also said the country is "on the right road", citing the strong stock market and peso, high revenue collections, and low fiscal deficit.

"The strong macroeconomic fundamentals are starting to pull out the economy," she added.

Arroyo also said government saved more than P20 billion last year from debt service as a result of improved economic performance and that the money is being invested in the people. (JMR)
