Police beef up security at call centers, nearby areas (2 p.m.)

MANILA -- The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has intensified security for employees of call centers based in Ortigas Center, Pasig City and Ayala Avenue in Makati City.

NCRPO Chief Vidal Querol said the move is part of their "Oplan Night Watch" which is aimed at eradicating crimes at night.

Querol said robbery-holdup incidents usually take place between 4 p.m. to 12 midnight and such cases happened in Ortigas and Ayala centers wherein most victims are workers of call centers based in the two business areas.

Police records show that there are about 7,000 people working at call centers in Ortigas while some 3,000 others working in Ayala.

Meanwhile, Southern Police District (SPD) Chief Wilfredo Garcia said several checkpoints have been conducted at night in the southern part of Metro Manila to deter criminals from committing illegal activities.

Chief Superintendent Garcia said the putting up of checkpoints has helped reduce to 20 percent the number of crimes in their area. (JFF)
