Tracker ranks Sun.Star website no. 1 in RP
* Netcraft lists Sun.Star as most-visited Filipino news site, topping Inquirer, Philippine Star
MANILA -- An international company tracking technology on the Internet has ranked the Sun.Star website at www.sunstar.com.ph as the most-visited Philippine news website.
The Netcraft.com, an Internet services company based in Bath, England, monitors the activity of millions of websites worldwide. A Philippine News Agency (PNA) report said the Netcraft listing as of last January 18 showed Sun.Star topping other Philippine news websites such as those of the Philippine Daily Inquirer that houses the Cebu Daily News and of the Philippine Star that includes news from its Cebu paper, The Freeman.
The Sun.Star website is Internet home to the only network of local newspapers in the Philippines. It carries news and information coming from the different Sun.Star community newspapers and bureaus in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The website was first launched in October 1996 as web home of the Sun.Star in Cebu, flagship newspaper of the Sun.Star publications network. It was later converted into a network website to cover the different Sun.Star publications in May 2000 under a new office, the Sun.Star Network Exchange. Its recent online offerings were the Arroyo Watch, "Krismas sa Pinas," Sinulog 2006, Pacquiao-Morales Rematch and the Dinagyang 2006 special sections.
Last year, the Sun.Star website had a high of 30.6 million hits, 10.7 million page views and 1.18 million unique visits a month. Visitors to the site include people in the Philippines and Filipino overseas workers or immigrants.
The PNA report said the high ranking of Philippine news websites showed the increasing number of Filipinos who get their news and other information from websites. It added, "There are also several millions of Filipino expatriates who rely on Filipino websites for news and information from the home country."
The top 20 Philippine news websites as of January 18, 2006, according to Netcraft.com, are:
