ILIGAN CITY -- An executive of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) was shot dead Wednesday afternoon and authorities believe the killing was a consequence of a clan feud.

The police identified the slain man as 50-year-old Manuel Deridigan, the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program officer for administration and finance of the DAR provincial office.

Investigation showed that Deridigan was waiting at past 4 p.m. for his child at a park near an exclusive school in Barangay San Miguel when at three men approached and shot him several times.

The gunmen fled on board an unspecified vehicle, according to authorities.

Rashid Datu, DAR provincial office information officer, said Deridigan was from the town of Picong (formerly Sultan Gumander) in Lanao del Sur.

Deridigan's officemates and police believe the killing is connected to a family feud or "rido" in the municipality of Picong, his hometown in Lanao del Sur, and they suspect that the perpetrators are from that place.

The police said they have picked up Thursday at least three men for interrogation. The identities are still being withheld pending the result of the investigation.

A "rido" is also seen as the motive behind the ambush that claimed seven lives and wounded five others in Balabagan town, Lanao del Sur recently.

Colonel Luisito Querubin, deputy commander of the Philippine Marines 2nd Brigade, said several persons were killed and wounded when armed men on board a Ford Fiera vehicle opened fire on a the billiard hall where the victims were playing.

Querubin said he suspects that the shooting incident was also a consequence of a clan war. The identities of those killed and wounded were not immediately available.

In the past few weeks, authorities here have worked to contain at least several "rido" or clan wars by conducting dialogues and amicable settlements. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
