Rescue ongoing for passengers of distressed yacht (1:15 p.m.)

MANILA -- A Coast Guard plane on Monday spotted a yacht that went missing over the weekend with one American and two Filipinos aboard, and a rescue ship was sent to pick them up, a spokesman said.

The M/L Passat left the beach resort of Puerto Galera on Mindoro island, southwest of Manila, Saturday afternoon for a nearby dive site when it developed engine trouble, coast guard spokesman Joseph Coyme said.

Rescue efforts had been hampered by haze and rough seas.

Coyme said the yacht was spotted drifting about 110 kilometers northwest of Lubang island, or 240 kilometers northwest of Manila, and that a rescue was under way. (AP)
