Aquino reminds public of Edsa people power (4:20 p.m.)
MANILA -- Former President Corazon Aquino calls on the public to remember the spirit of the first Edsa Revolution during a press conference held Tuesday.
The country will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Edsa I People Power Revolution on February 19.
Aquino said the Edsa Revolution provided the country a good start in building the nation.
"Having the morals I ground, we the Filipino people have vanquished dictatorship and restored democracy," she said.
However, the former President said it is sad that the active participation of the citizenry in rebuilding the nation is lacking.
Aquino said, "We should examin where we have fallen short and resolve to fill the gaps, rather than give up on democracy."
She added that there are talks about revising the Constitution and changing the political structure to cure the government's vulnerability to partisan obstructionism.
"There may be value in considering the parliamentary government and federalism but I do not believe that this addresses the urgent issues we are facing today. All talk of political structure is pointless if the very spirit of democracy is weak," Aquino pointed out.
Aquino said no government, whether parliamentary or presidential, could function effectively if it is detached from the people it is suppose to serve.
She stressed that the people's faith and trust in its leaders need to be restored and strengthened. (Sunnex) |
