Nearly 10,000 Filipinos win U.S. class-action suit against the Marcos estate for torture, summary executions and disappearances. Jurors award US$1.9 billion.

Movie star Joseph Estrada is elected president.

Estrada is ousted by "people power 2" over alleged corruption and is succeeded by Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Arroyo wins a six-year term but is accused of vote-rigging.

Key members of Arroyo's Cabinet quit, but she survives three impeachment bids. Protests demanding her ouster and coup rumors continue into 2006. (AP)
