Uprising affects economy: Arroyo (3:10 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said the economy is greatly affected when there is a coup attempt.

Arroyo cited that coup attempts from 1989 have caused the country to lessen its momentum in terms of economic take off.

She said, "We have to ensure our momentum and avoid economic fall out and this is the reason why we have declared the state of emergency."

Arroyo said in order for the country to recover what it has lost due to uprisings, there is a need to increase infrastructures, invest in education, and be efficient in collecting taxes.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Avelino "Nonong" Cruz assured that the Marines are solid behind the Constitution and are loyal to the chain of command.

This was after the standoff of the Marines leadership Sunday, which was resolved late Sunday night.

Meanwhile, Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila said he received calls from call center firms asking on the situation of peace and order in the country.

Favila said call centers feared that their operation might be disrupted due to the situation.

"I assured them that the government knows that they (call centers) are operating on a 24/7 schedule. I told them that the government does not intend to stop their operations," said Favila.

Finance Secretary Margarito "Gary" Teves for his part said they are doing their best to be efficient in collecting taxes.

Teves added they are on the lookout of tax evaders. (Sunnex)
