Militant leader expects more declarations from Arroyo By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
DAVAO -- A leader of a militant group said they are still expecting more declarations from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo even after she lifted Proclamation 1017.
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) secretary general Ariel Casilao said Arroyo hastily lifted Proclamation 1017 after she learned that her declaration is "illegal and unconstitutional."
Proclamation 1017, which the President has declared due to coup attempts, placed the country under the state of national emergency.
"Bayan still believes that a more vicious declaration has yet to come -- an outright martial law declaration to quell the coup, rebellion," Casilao said.
Casilao said Arroyo only wanted to satisfy the growing clamor of the influential business sector and the church forcing her to lift the proclamation.
Despite the lifting of Proclamation 1017, he said, they would still continue to call for Arroyo's ouster.
"So long as the illegitimacy of her regime continue to persist, so long as the deepening economic crisis continue to be felt by majority of our people, so long as the people sees no meaningful change in our system, the call for her ouster will never cease," disclosed Casilao.
Arroyo lifted a week-old state of emergency Friday morning after her security advisers assured her that the threat of a coup has eased. (With reports from Sunnex)
