DAVAO CITY -- The communist New People's Army (NPA) released on Wednesday a councilman of hinterland Barangay Salapawan after keeping him captive for 42 days.

Salapawan councilman Rudy Adang was released by the group of Kumander Parago last Wednesday afternoon to Davao City Councilors Jimmy G. Dureza and Leonardo R. Avila III at Sitio Camotes, Barangay Malabog, Paquibato district.

The release was made after weeks of negotiations between the City Government and communist guerillas. Adang was supposed to be released last week to Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who begged off due to his tight schedule.

Adang was taken hostage by the rebels along with Berino Mambuo, Inggo Lintanod, and Tony Legue at Sitio Cinco, Barangay Mapula last January 25.

Mambuo escaped a few hours later while Lintanod and Legue escaped separately on February 9 and 11.

Authorities said no ransom was paid for Adang's release. Parago was earlier reported as demanding M14 rifles as ransom for the captive.

Adang is now in the custody of Dureza and will be presented to the media soon. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
