More soldiers probed over failed coup
MANILA -- Certain military officers are being investigated for their alleged involvement in the failed coup against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last February 24, Army Chief Hermogenes Esperon said Thursday.
Lieutenant General Esperon named Army Lieutenant Colonel Nestor Flordeliza, chief of staff of the First Scout Ranger Regiment (FSRR), and his staff Captain Ruben Guinolbay as among those who have been ordered restricted at Camp Tecson in Bulacan for questioning in relation to the failed power grab.
He also said Flordeliza was relieved from his post pending the investigation.
Aside from Flordeliza and Guinolbay, there are six other middle-level and junior officers and 17 enlisted personnel who have been detained in the camp for the same offense.
Last week, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief Generoso Senga placed Brigadier General Danilo Lim and Major Jason Aquino under restriction for alleged involvement in the alleged coup. He also relieved Lim as commander of the First Scout Ranger Regiment.
Major General Renato Miranda, commander of the Philippine Marines (PM), and Colonel Ariel Querubin, former commander of the First Marine Brigade based in Mindanao, voluntarily relinquished their posts after they were linked to the destabilization plot.
Esperon said Major Bartolome Bacarro, spokesman for the PA, is leading the investigation against the military officers who are linked to the foiled coup. He said the military will apply the full force of the law against the coup plotters.
Last February 24, the military said it preempted a coup against President Arroyo during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Edsa People Power 1 revolt.
The military said the "disgruntled" soldiers conspired with communist rebels and civilian individuals to unseat President Arroyo through a military uprising. Lim and Querubin were among those who were tagged as poised to lead the oust Arroyo move. The two denied the charges.
The foiled coup prompted the President to put the country under a state of emergency. (JFF/Sunnex)
