Ilocos Sur lad tops military academy graduates

BAGUIO CITY -- An engineering graduate from Ilocos Sur led this year's 324 graduates of the Mandirigmang Dangal ng Lahi (Mandala) Class 2006 of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

Cadet Ariel Toledo from Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur would be receiving the Presidential Saber, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Achievement Award for Academic Excellence, and a Philippine Air Force (PAF) Saber come graduation ceremonies on March 25.

Toledo is one of the 11 magna cum laude graduates of the PMA Class of 2006, the biggest batch to graduate in the history of Asia's premier military institution. He is joining the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

During his academic years, Toledo consistently belonged to the top 10 of his batch. He ranked number seven, five, and number one, during his first, second, and third and fourth years, respectively.

The other top 10 graduates are Cadets Francis Rosales of Baguio City; Romel Sotero of Benguet Province; Ethelbert Aaron Kiunisala of Misamis Oriental; Michael Gotong also of Benguet; Amina Abdula of Tarlac; Noah Hernandez of Kidapawan City; Ermin Soloren of South Cotabato; Joe Vergel Flores, also of Kidapawan City; and Joy Peñalosa of South Cotabato.

Except for cadets Abdula and Peñalosa, the others are also graduating as magna cum laude.

Joining the 11 who will be graduating magna cum laude are cadets Samson Servano, Jovert Irvin Vertulfo and Jiro Poblacion.

Aside from the top 10 graduates, PMA Superintendent Leopoldo Maligalig also named other cadets who will receive respective honors.

Cadet May Wangdali of Sagada, Mountain Province will receive the Athletic Saber. She is the second female cadet to get the award after Cadet First Class Jessie Rose Bucalen of Tabuk, Kalinga in 2002.

Of the 324 graduates, 66 are joining the PAF, 79 the Philippine Navy (PN), and 179 would join the Philippine Army (PA).
