Poll body readies recall vs Baguio mayor

BAGUIO CITY -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc has ordered the preparation of the guidelines and activities for a recall election in Baguio City for the mayoralty post.
However any preparations that has to be undertaken by the office of the deputy executive director for operations (Odedo) is subject to the availability of funds, the commission's en banc ruled.
A recall election would cost around P5 million.
Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. and Commissioners Rex Borra, Florentino Tuason and Romeo Brawner, in a meeting held last February 28, resolved that the petition submitted by petitioner Godofredo Cawaing and others against Mayor Braulio Yaranon is sufficient.
Sun.Star tried to get Yaranon's comment but he is reportedly indisposed. He however earlier welcomed moves to oust him from office saying he is ready to face his critics and prove them wrong.
The Comelec is set to verify the 22,751 signatures this week. The agency has 12 days to check on each signature.
Last February 6, City Election Officer Maribel Uminga issued a certification that the petitioners were able to attain the required 15 percent signatures needed for a recall to prosper.
Out of the 42,108 signatures, 22,751 of the signatories are registered voters of Baguio.
Comelec also certified that the petitioners were able to comply with other requirements such as payment of the P30,000 filing fee and certifications from the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the National Statistics Office. (Sunnex)
