Troops kill Zambo Sur vice mayor's assassin By Al Jacinto
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Government soldiers killed a notorious gun-for-hire tagged as behind the ambush of a southern town vice mayor and two other politicians in a clash in Zamboanga del Sur province, the military said Tuesday.
It said soldiers gunned down Bandino Albios in a firefight Monday in the village of Hakayan in Dinas town. His companions, including group leader Kamil Lao, managed to escape but troops were tracking them down, the military said.
The military tagged Albios as behind the ambush of Dinas town vice mayor Mujahid Andi in December 15 last year. Albios was also implicated in the killing of Manuel Mira and Alejandro Estriba, both councilors in Dinas town, in October last year.
"Troops recovered a .357-caliber revolver, assorted ammunition, and a pair of military and police uniforms from the slain gunman," said Southern Command chief Major General Gabriel Habacon.
The vice mayor and two of his companions were killed while another two were wounded, after gunmen opened fire on a government convoy while returning home from a meeting in the nearby town of Pitogo. The town's mayor, Wilfredo Asoy, escaped unhurt from the attack in the village of Sambowalan.
Police earlier said the ambush was triggered by a feud between the Maulana and Lao clans. Andi was a relative of the late Dinas town vice mayor Abdulbasit Salicula Maulana, who was also killed along with his five bodyguards, in an ambush by gunmen in July last year. (Sun.Star Zamboanga/Sunnex)
