Woman tied to ward's drowning
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- A woman is linked to the drowning of her five-year-old ward at a beach resort in Barangay Barra, Opol in Misamis Oriental last Wednesday.
The neighbors and the helper of the woman identified as Liza Casiño, alias "Bebing", accused her of being responsible for the death of her ward Nathaniel Casiño.
The child was rushed to the Cagayan de Oro Medical Center (COMC) but was later declared dead.
According to the elder Casiño, she, a lover, her helper and the victim went swimming at the San Juan beach resort in Opol Wednesday where she taught the child how to swim.
In a radio interview with anchorman Zaldy Ocon, Liza denied drowning the child, saying that Nathaniel must have choked on something he previously ate.
She said she administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the child because she thought he drowned.
But according to Casiño's helper Lyza Gole, the woman suspect treated the child harshly while teaching him how to swim and even allegedly forced him on the water, causing him to drown.
Gole said she was told by Casiño that the child was fine and it was only later that she learned that he died.
The child was allegedly maltreated by Casiño, who usually punished the child by hitting him with a TV antenna and slippers.
The child was also reportedly placed inside a sack if he misbehaved. He was also made to kneel on salt every time he refused to eat.
In an interview with Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, Gole revealed that Casiño maltreated the child almost always during meals.
"Mapasakitan gyud niya sir kay lingas man kaayo ang bata, dili mokaon ensakto," Gole said. (She hurt the child during mealtimes because he was difficult to feed.)
Gole was also interviewed by personnel of the Commission on Human Rights and the Department of Social worker and Development (DSWD).
The child's remains, interred at the Somo Funeral Homes, are set to be autopsied while the suspect is placed under the custody of the Opol police precinct. (Joey Nacalaban of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/With a report from Sun.Star Superbalita)
