Army retrieves landmine in Sultan Kudarat

DAVAO CITY -- Army soldiers retrieved a powerful landmine allegedly placed by the New People's Army (NPA) in the middle of the road in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat on Sunday.

A squad from the Alpha Company of the Army's 25th Infantry Battalion led by a certain Sergeant Maturan discovered the improvised explosive device buried in the middle of the road at Sitio Old Bantangan, Lasak after a tip from residents.

The landmine is about 12 by 9 square inches in diameter, weighs 10 kilos, and encased in a freon tank container with firing wire of about 70 meters.

The improvised bomb contained an improvised blasting cap, 15 meters detonating cord, 50 sticks dynamite, and six meters detonating cord as booster placed inside a can of sardines.

The NPA rebels reportedly buried it 2 feet under the ground about a week ago.

Bomb experts said the recovered landmine could blow up a 6 x 6 truck up to 30 feet high if detonated.

The landmine was brought to the Army battalion for proper disposal.

Army officials, meanwhile, thanked the residents in the area for the information. (BOT/With reports from Peng Aliño)
