House Speaker faces formidable foes for PM under new gov't: congressman (10:05 a.m.)

MANILA -- Is House Speaker Jose de Venecia kissing his dream of becoming a Prime Minister goodbye?

This as some members of the administration bloc did not discount the possibility that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would run as Prime Minister once a parliamentary-unicameral government is established.

According to House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles, Arroyo becoming a Prime Minister would not be impossible since almost all the executive powers of the President could be transferred to the post of Prime Minister.

Nograles also said while the President could finish her term in 2010 under the proposed Constitution of the House committee on Constitutional amendments, she could also resign and run as member of the Parliament
and be voted on as Prime Minister next year.

Nograles himself was unsure about de Venecia becoming Prime Minister, noting that he is also facing many other possible contenders aside from the
President.

Others may as well as seek the position of Prime Minister like former president Fidel Ramos and Senators Manuel Villar, Manuel "Mar" Roxas III, Edgardo Angara and Aquilino Pimentel Jr., and among others.

Nograles added that even businessman Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. of the Nationalist Peoples' Coalition may also run for the post.

He said de Venecia is being touted to be Prime Minister because of his experience as Speaker of the House. (DBP)
