Ex-Supreme Court chief justice named envoy to UN
CEBU CITY -- Former Supreme Court chief justice Hilario Davide Jr. was named as the country's permanent representative to the United Nations.
"I have the honor to submit for the consent of the Commission on Appointments the nomination of Hon. Hilario G. Davide Jr. as permanent representative of the Republic of the Philippines to the United Nations in New York," President Arroyo said in her March 24 letter to the commission.
Davide will replace Lauro Baja.
ABS-CBN News also reported that Baja would replace Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo who would soon be named ambassador to Washington.
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel said in the same TV report that while Davide's appointment was a "good move" for the President, it might not necessarily be so for the former justice chief who had occupied the top post at the Supreme Court.
Davide retired last December 20 when he marked his 70th birthday, the mandatory retirement age.
Broadcaster and Sun.Star Cebu columnist Bobby Nalzaro had written about Davide's possible appointment to United Nations in his column last March 6.
The President's naming Davide to the post came days after he submitted to Malacañang several recommendations on poll reforms in his capacity as presidential adviser on electoral reform. (Sun.Star Cebu)
