Security tightened in Davao City for Lenten season By Ben O. Tesiorna
DAVAO CITY -- Task Force Davao and the Davao City Police Office are on red alert as the Christian world commemorates the Lenten season this week.
Eduardo del Rosario, Task Force Davao chief, said they have intensified their security measures at various land, air, and sea terminals in the city to ensure that the public is safe from any threats of violence.
Starting Monday, soldiers and policemen are on tight guard at the Davao City Overland Transport terminal in Ecoland as well as at the Sasa wharf and the Davao International Airport.
The three terminals were venues of the bloodiest bombings that claimed close to a hundred innocent lives and injured hundreds more in the past years.
Police Regional Director Ricardo Quinto said their heightened alert status would continue after the Holy Week well into the opening of classes.
Dubbed as Oplan SumVac (summer vacation), Quinto said, they are also keeping eye on the beaches all over the region especially along the Davao Gulf where most of the resorts, including the world famous Pearl Farm, are situated.
Pearl Farm had also been subjected to a terrorist attack a few years back.
Authorities, however, assured the public that they have not monitored any terrorist threat so far. All the security measures are implemented to pre-empt any attacks, they said.
Malls, churches, parks, and resorts are the most frequented places this summer and it is not surprising to see armed police and military personnel in these places for the duration of the summer season. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
