ZAMBOANGA CITY -- At least five people were seriously wounded in a dynamite attack in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, officials said.

Officials said the explosion occurred around 1:30 p.m. Friday inside a market in the coastal town of Margosatubig.

"Five people were wounded and authorities are still investigating the motive of the attack," said Captain Jose Ritchie Pabilonia, a spokesman for the military's Southern Command.

Pabilonia said the victims were rushed to the clinic. He said the dynamite was placed inside a bottle and exploded inside the busy market.

"We don't know who were behind the attack, but police suspect it was connected to a feud among fishermen," Pabilonia said without elaborating.

Vendetta killings are common in the southern Philippines and the proliferation of illegal weapons and explosives have made it more difficult for authorities to fight crimes in the troubled region.

The town is also a known lair of the communist New People's Army rebels. (Sun.Star Zamboanga/Sunnex)
