DAVAO CITY -- A nun and 10 other passengers were killed while 26 others were injured in a highway accident involving three vehicles in Panabo City, Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened along Km. 29 in Barangay JP Laurel at around at 4:50 p.m.
Vehicles involved in the pile-up include a Kia van owned by Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), a motorcycle, and a JRC passenger bus.
Killed were HCDC comptroller Sr. Mary Grace Pareñas, HCDC high school student activity coordinator Reynaldo Puno and his nine-year-old son Jasrey, and Rodelio Buhian of Holy Cross in Calinan.
Van driver Ricardo Roa was also killed in the accident, along with van passengers Eufemio and Corazon Digal, Domiciano Malon, Dorotia and Janna Pestaño, and Tristan Malabarbas -- all of Barangay Camudmud in the Island Garden City of Samal.
All victims were aboard the van, which was on its way to Davao City from Tagum City where the victims attended a seminar on livelihood and community extension service.
Seven passengers were killed on the spot while four others died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The motorcycle driver and some bus passengers were among those who were injured. They were brought to Rivera and Zomoso hospitals in Panabo City.
Meanwhile, the bodies of those who are killed in the accident were brought to Villa Funeral and St. Therese Funeral.
Initial reports showed that the van was on its way to Davao City while the bus was heading to Sto. Tomas when the motorcycle crossing the highway was hit by the van.
The van driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the bus.
"The management felt sorry for what happened and we'll try our best to help the victims and their families," human resource director Napoleon Trillanes said Friday. (With reports from Peng Aliño)
