'Da Vinci Code' gets R rating from Philippine censors (3:10 p.m.)

MANILA -- After all the furor over the perceived negative effects of the controversial movie "The Da Vinci Code", the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) decided Tuesday to give the film an R rating.

This means that the movie, directed by Ron Howard and top-billed by Tom Hanks, will be shown in the Philippines as scheduled on May 18.

The rating means the movie can be viewed by adults only, viewers 18 and below are not allowed.

The movie censors said the adults can only discern what is fact and fiction and what is evil and good.

The move also puts to rest fears that the film, which dwells on the alleged relationship between Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene and that their sacred lineage still exists up to now, will not be shown in the country because of the opposition of staunch Catholics and the clergy.

The film adaptation of the novel "The Da Vinci Code" written by Dan Brown had been called blasphemous. (Sunnex)
