Militant leader in Pangasinan slain in ambush (3:15 p.m.)

ANOTHER member of the left-wing party-list group Bayan Muna was killed while his brother was wounded when fired upon by still unidentified suspects in San Nicolas town in Pangasinan before noon Tuesday.

Police identified the latest fatality as Jose Doton, 70, Bayan Muna secretary-general for Pangasinan province.

Doton is the fifth leftist activist slain within the week and 585th since January 2001 when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo took office, based on records of the militant organization.

The Philippine National Police's Task Force Usig, an interim body tasked to look into the spate of killings headed by Deputy Director General Avelino Razon, however said Doton is only the 123rd leftist official and member slain since 2001.

Quoting sketchy reports, Razon said Doton and his brother, Diosdado, were attacked somewhere in San Nicolas town around 10:45 a.m. Diosdado was rushed to a nearby hospital and is reportedly in critical condition. (Sunnex)
