Gov't bank execs to be called to explain money laundering case (10:18 a.m.)

MANILA -- Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to summon officials of the United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) to shed light on allegations of a former beauty queen linking former President Joseph Estrada in the laundering of some P2.07 billion worth of
securities, bonds and other debt instruments in year 2000.

Gonzalez said UCPB officials can now be called for questioning for case buildup after they were identified by Joelle Marie Henson Pelaez as among
those behind the laundering.

"The investigation should be made fast. There are certain persons here that could already be invited for investigation, including the bank officials," he said.

Gonzalez said the bank officials may be held liable for graft and falsification of public documents if Pelaez's accusations turn out to be true.

He however denied accusations that Malacaņang officials including him, are behind the decision of Pelaez to come out. (ECV)
