Oracion reaches Everest summit ridge, 2 hours away from peak (10:50 a.m.)

FILIPINO mountaineer Heracleo "Leo" Oracion has reached the Mt. Everest Summit Ridge Wednesday and is about two hours away from the peak.

First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition leader Art Valdez said Oracion reached the mountain's summit at about 5:44 this morning.

Valdez, in a radio interview over DZMM, said that in less than two hours, the Philippine flag will be on top of the highest mountain.

Erwin "Pastor" Emata, another member of the expedition, has left Camp 3 early this morning and is expected to reach Camp 4 by 12 noon or 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Camp 4 is the last stopover before the mountain's summit. Mt. Everest peak is estimated at 9,000 meters above sea level.

Valdez said their strategy is one climber after the other so that if the first fails there is still the second member of the expedition team who would reach the mountain's peak. (Sunnex)
