Tourism agency now manages Boracay Island (9:51 a.m.)

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has placed the world-famous Boracay Island under the administration and control of the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA).

Arroyo, through Memorandum Order (MO) 214, said the PTA'’s supervision would be made through the Eminent Persons Group, which has been tasked to oversee the island’'s development, and in coordination with the Aklan Provincial Government.

She said the issuance of MO 214 is also part of government'’s policy to promote fast-growing industries like tourism, which is a source of valuable jobs.

She said Boracay Island’'s rapid, unplanned tourism growth has been accompanied by issues that demand government’'s immediate attention. Boracay has been dubbed as the best beach in the world. (JMR)
